Nottingham’s School Attendance Sees Huge Improvement

Nottingham council’s zero tolerance policy towards persistent absence has seen a significant improvement in school attendance, with recent published figures showing that Primary School attendance is now equal to the national average, and Secondary School attendance is now better than the national average. These are the best figures that Nottingham has seen in a decade, whilst overall the national average of absences have worsened, illustrating how local council involvement can be extremely beneficial to children’s education.

John Dexter, Director of Education in Nottingham, stated that: ‘we’ve taken a tough stance on attendance and give a very clear message to pupils. We want our pupils to succeed in their education and we believe that being in school gives them the best chance to do this. We know that the majority of parents act responsibly to ensure their children are in school when they should be, but it is vital that we tackle those who are breaking the law.’
