A brand-new summer attraction opens in York today, bringing a touch of beach life to the riverside. The YO1 Beach Club is a family-friendly space located in Tower Gardens at the foot of Skeldergate Bridge, and is open every day until Sunday 5th September from 9.30am until 6.00pm Monday to Friday, and from 9.00am until 6.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is free and bookings are not required.
As an alcohol-free, fenced space, the YO1 Beach Club is a fun and safe urban oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, with peaceful views of the river and passing boats. The Club comprises a wood-panelled covered café and veranda with a boardwalk entrance across a beach area with picnic tables. Completing the nautical look, there are colourful beach huts, lobster pots, surfboards and even a boat for the kids to play in.
While adults can sit and relax on the beach with a mocktail, zero beer or coffee, a separate canvas-covered sandpit will keep younger visitors entertained, as well as sheltered from the sun or rain, with a seahorse treasure hunt. In addition, fun educational boards have been designed to increase awareness about preserving the environment of our seashores and oceans, as well as to promote safety at the seaside and around rivers.
The open barbecue serves a choice of delicious grilled food - including a menu for kids - from bacon, sausage and vegan baps, to tasty burgers, southern fried chicken, pizza and everybody's beach favourite – fish and chips. The café serves a range of refreshing beverages and non-alcoholic options including 'Unicorn' milkshakes, coke floats, pina-co-nada and other mocktails and a full range of coffees from York Coffee Emporium. Ice creams from Ryeburn of Helmsley, cakes, and beach treats and toys will also be available to purchase.
The YO1 Beach Club provides the perfect solution for an original and exciting celebration - for children, under-18s and adults alike - whether it be a birthday, baby shower or family and friends gathering. A range of packages are available or can be tailor-made to suit a variety of occasions and budgets.
Maria Farrugia, Manager of the YO1 Beach Club, said "We aim to offer somewhere that's a bit different and fun for all ages, where adults can relax and soak up the beach vibe, and kids can play in a safe designated area. With the shift in people's drinking habits and the need to keep children and teenagers safe, the YO1 Beach Club provides a haven away from the hustle. Our award-winning lager, pale ale and cider from Drynks Unlimited won a deal on Dragon's Den and you can taste why – it's just like the real deal but you can drive home afterwards!"
The YO1 Beach Club is produced by Coopers Marquees, a family-run, York-based business which is now the 10th largest marquee company in the UK with a national reputation for excellence. The company supplies a range of structures to events large and small including York Racecourse and The Great Yorkshire Show.
Johnny Cooper, CEO of Coopers Marquees said "We are delighted to introduce a novel riverside destination to locals and staycationers alike, and particularly to be able to offer local employment opportunities, both for our contractors and our 25 part and full time staff."
The YO1 Beach Club will support two charities - the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) whose search and rescue service has been saving lives around the UK coast for nearly 200 years, and York Rescue Boat, an independent lifeboat and search and rescue team centring around the Rivers Ouse and Foss.
The YO1 Beach Club will conform to all prevailing government guidelines regarding Covid-19.
The YO1 Beach Club will be open from 9.30am until 6pm Monday to Friday, and from 9.00am until 6.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays from 24th June to 5th September. The YO1 Beach Club is located in Tower Gardens, adjacent to the river at the foot of Skeldergate Bridge and just across Tower St from Clifford's Tower. The Club is named after its postcode YO1 9RZ. There is easy parking in the adjacent St George's Field car park.
Please note The YO1 Beach Club is an alcohol-free event.
