ALL THAT (FREE) JAZZ AS ST PETER’S SCHOOL & YORK MINSTER UNITE TO PRESENT DUKE ELLINGTON’S MUSIC FROM THE SACRED CONCERTS
Any service or concert in York Minster is always special but jazz aficionados are in for a real treat on Wednesday 29 June when Duke Ellington’s Music from The Sacred Concerts – a spectacular Jazz Eucharist - will delight the eyes and ears from 5.30-7.15pm.
Open to all, with no tickets required, this will be an evening to remember for visitors of all ages and faiths, or none.
Join us for this special opportunity to see tap dancer Junior Laniyan in action, and hear music from The Clark Tracey Orchestra, the Choir of York Minster, St Peter’s School Choir and Choral Society, plus soloists Teuta Koco and Mark Williams.
Described by Ellington himself as ‘the most important thing I have ever done’, the Sacred Concerts are a unique blend of jazz and choral classical music, with elements of gospel and blues. Rarely performed, The Sacred Concerts feature big band, mixed choir and soloists who combine to produce powerful and evocative melodies celebrating spirituality and the Christian faith.
This event is for jazz lovers, choral music fans, worshippers, and anyone who enjoys great music.
The Preacher will be The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, to mark the Patronal Festival of York Minster (St Peter’s Day), a special celebration day for St Peter’s School, York.
Paul Miles-Kingston, Director of Music, St Peter’s School 13-18, said:
“Duke Ellington is one of the great 20th century composers. We look forward to hearing these rare and moving pieces once again in the context of a Eucharist Service. We are so fortunate to have Clark Tracey’s Orchestra with us, bringing their wealth of experience of previous performances of these sacred works. This will be an unforgettable evening!”
