If you thought that the Yorkshire Coast was all about summer days at the seaside with a bucket and spade, think again! As the temperature drops, al fresco dining is replaced by comfort food by the fire, and shorts and t-shirts make way for warm knitwear that is a stylish as it is functional. And without the summer crowds, it is a fantastic time to explore the rugged coastline and towns with a unique Yorkshire welcome.
"We can't wait for winter on the Yorkshire Coast," explains Janet Deacon, head of tourism and culture at Scarborough Borough Council. "Our entire coastal culture transforms to generate warmth and light, and you'll get to experience the seaside as never before: tastes that'll make your toes toasty, including time-honoured local bakes that, as your gran says 'stick to your ribs'; hot toddies brewed from our own home-grown and award-winning whiskies and gins; and of course, we're blessed to have Britain's best, piping-hot fish and chips. We even have our own speciality winter fashion!"
On the darkest nights, visitors to the Yorkshire Coast can enjoy some of the world's starriest skies – with low levels of light pollution giving amazing views of the magical spectacle of the Northern Lights or starscapes reaching to the end of the Milky Way, making it a huge draw for amateur astronomers and professional photographers alike.
The winter chill also brings to Yorkshire's shores the most succulent seafood in Europe – including much-anticipated winter cod. Winter storms cast ashore treasured gemstones, jet and amber which are uniquely hand-crafted into jewellery by skilled local artisans, or they reveal rare dinosaur fossils studied by the world's geologists, so it is a fantastic time to go beach combing, too.
"Our coastal cottages are the perfect bolthole for a winter's day, too, whether you spend the day exploring, or simply curled up with a good book by a roaring open fire," adds Janet. "There's plenty of entertainment, too, if you know where to look for it: gothic mystery nights, shanty singing or afternoon tea parties are all on offer!"
