Dulwich College pupil to represent UK on global stage after year of STEM achievements

It has been a standout year for Dulwich College pupils who have celebrated a series of remarkable achievements in national STEM competitions alongside enjoying inspiring educational trips and talks.

Across mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry, students demonstrated outstanding creativity, skill and passion. In the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge alone, 100 pupils participated, collecting 39 Gold, 31 Silver, and 15 Bronze awards — with 38 qualifying for the next round. In science, 17 Upper School pupils entered the British Biology Olympiad, earning two Gold medals, while 30 Year 12 pupils excelled in the Senior Physics Challenge Online, taking home 12 Golds, 13 Silvers, and 5 Bronze medals.

Dulwich also enjoyed its strongest ever results in the British Physics Olympiad when 25 students secured a remarkable three Top Gold, two Gold, nine Silver, and eight Bronze medals. Particularly noteworthy were the Year 12 entrants who excelled despite facing material that went beyond their current A level studies. Year 13 pupil Robert progressed to Round 2 and achieved a prestigious Gold medal among the UK’s top 100 students.

Chemistry results were equally impressive: in the UK Chemistry Olympiad when Dulwich College pupils won 11 Gold, 17 Silver and 15 Bronze awards. Exceptional Year 13 student Zesang finished in the top 10 nationally, earning a place in Round 2 at Cambridge. Following further assessment, Zesang was selected as one of only four students to represent the UK at the International Chemistry Olympiad this summer — a phenomenal achievement.

Meanwhile, a team of Upper School chemists brought home a trophy after securing third place at the University of Cambridge’s competitive Chemistry Race.

Beyond competitions, students expanded their horizons with a number of STEM experiences, including a visit to CERN in Geneva to explore cutting-edge particle physics research, and a Design Technology trip to the Mini BMW factory to see automotive production first hand. Dulwich was proud to host the national round of the Weizmann Safecracking Competition, where 21 teams from 16 schools took on the challenge of designing and solving physics-based safes — a thrilling display of innovation and teamwork.

Reflecting on the year, Simon Dungate-Jones, Acting Deputy Master Academic said: "Our students' dedication, enthusiasm and achievements across so many fields are truly inspiring. We are proud to see them gaining national and international recognition and look forward to seeing what they will achieve next."
