Getting ready for a healthy summer!

With warmer weather hopefully just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning for the summer break, whether that will be at home or travelling further afield in the UK or overseas. Sadly, the weather cannot be guaranteed but there are plenty of things that can be done to help the whole family stay well over the holidays and beyond.

Holiday Planning – At Home and Abroad
Check out the Healthy Surrey website for lots of information and signposting on sun, water and food safety (and lots more) at home and abroad.

See travelhealthpro.org.uk for a wealth of resources for travellers, including country-specific advice to help families plan what to do before jetting off. Some travel vaccines are free – find out more.

Vaccinations
Is everyone in the family up to date with vaccinations? Vaccines help to protect everybody. For babies and young children, those at school or adults, it’s never too late to ‘catch up’ with most vaccines, especially any that may have been missed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Surrey School Age Immunisation Service website can explain how any child or young person can ‘catch up’ on any vaccines they may have missed at school. GPs can also provide these.

Measles has been a particular problem again over the last few years. Recent outbreaks in unvaccinated communities in London and other parts of England show us how quickly this nasty infection can spread, causing unnecessary (and sometimes serious) illness in people who have not been vaccinated. Tips for Keeping Safe on Farm Visits
Farms are fantastic places for little (and bigger!) explorers, but even the friendliest animals can carry germs that make people unwell. Some bugs can cause more serious illness, especially in young children and pregnant women – and animals don’t have to look poorly to pass them on.

With a bit of know‑how, everyone can enjoy the muddy boots, cute animals and fresh air while staying healthy and happy.
