Food, fire and family adventure at West Horsley Place
This autumn, families can step back in time at West Horsley Place as Saxon Saga: Living History & Fire Festival brings the sights, sounds and stories of Saxon life to the Surrey estate on 24th and 25th October.
With the Bayeux Tapestry going on display at the British Museum for the first time, the weekend offers families a chance to look beyond the battles and kings of 1066 and discover what everyday life was like for the people who lived, worked and gathered there more than 1,000 years ago.
Younger visitors will have plenty to get involved with, including Saxon games, opportunities to paint a Saxon and storytelling in the library. Families can also try their hand at weaving on a loom or spinning sheep’s wool - essential everyday skills in Saxon life.
Living history group Herigeas Hundas will also demonstrate traditional crafts, music and combat, while Jane’s Historical Kitchen explores Saxon food and cooking in the ancient kitchen.
As dusk falls, each day culminates in a dramatic performance of Beowulf, followed by the lighting of a handcrafted replica Saxon ship - a spectacular fire-filled finale for the whole family.
Saxon Saga takes place from 1.30 - 7.30pm on 24th and 25th October 2026. Tickets from £15 adults and £8 children.
