The HMS Trincomalee is centre stage at The National Museum of the Royal Navy

This half term experience life at sea at The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Hartlepool for their 'Meet the Navy' weekend. For one weekend only, the past and present will collide as visitors can meet members of the Royal Navy and find out about their current activities, as well as step back in time and explore the incredible HMS Trincomalee, the oldest floating warship in Europe.

There will be plenty to explore during this family-friendly event on the 23rd and 24th October. The Royal Navy will be hosting a variety of science themed activities for little adventurers to take part in, a VR experience for older children and teens, and a bungee run – these are just some of the activities for families to enjoy. Two Royal Navy training vessels, HMS Explorer and HMS Example will arrive into the marina adding to the spectacle of HMS Trincomalee.

Lieutenant Stewart Weir from the Royal Navy comments that 'This event is a great chance for members of the public to come down and see what the Royal Navy are doing today. We have a variety of activities for the whole family to get involved in so they can see what life at sea is really like."

After learning about the navy's current activities, visitors can travel back in time and experience life at sea during the Napoleonic era.  Step on board the historic HMS Trincomalee or visit the exciting 'Fighting Ships' exhibit to experience a real battle. Take a ringside seat and watch one of the live weapons demonstrations, where you'll witness the firing of a flintlock pistol, musket and cannon, using real gun powder. To finish the day, little ones can visit the site's adventure play ship.

General Manager of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Roslyn Adamson mentions "This is the first of what we hope will become regular collaborative events with the Royal Navy. Our museum focuses on the history of our Senior Service and its contribution to making Britain what it is today. It's important to highlight the important work the navy continues to do, and this event will help us do this whilst ensuring our visitors have great fun."

This event is in addition to a packed programme of activities taking place throughout half term. Tickets for timed entry are on sale at https://www.nmrn.org.uk/our-museum/hartlepool. One-way systems and hand sanitiser are still in place for your safety and mask wearing and test and trace remain encouraged at Hartlepool this autumn.
