Lose yourself in a world of naval history and maritime navigation at the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool


 

This February half-term, the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool's historic quay is playing host to a range of activities that showcase the creative and often challenging ways that sailors would navigate the sea. Visitors can discover the old and the new. Learn all about the old ways of sailing across the sea using the stars, then get up close to the modern groundbreaking underwater archaeology project exploring the depths of the sea to recover artefacts from an 18th century wreck.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool, Navigation Trail and Storytelling, Saturday 17th February to Sunday 25th February

Long before the times of satellites, digital maps and modern astrology, sailors travelled the globe using the stars. Learn all about the various ways sailors would use stars to navigate the sea, as you take part in a trail around the recreated Georgian quay. Special storytelling sessions during the February half-term will also teach visitors all about naval history in the perfect setting. These events are free with a valid museum ticket. 

 

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool, Diving Deep: HMS Invincible 1744  

From using the stars to sail the sea, to modern underwater exploration and excavation, Diving Deep provides an insight into the extraordinary work of a team of professional and volunteer divers. The exhibition explores the fascinating discovery and underwater excavation of HMS Invincible, an 18th century battleship which sank in February 1758 when she hit a sandbank in the East Solent.
