KYNREN HOSTS CELEBRATION FOR ITS DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS

To mark Volunteers’ Week, which is in its 40th year, Kynren organisers hosted a picnic on Sunday 2nd June welcoming its team of volunteers involved in the spectacular Bishop Auckland production.

Volunteers make up the 1,000-strong cast and crew who come together each summer to perform and help backstage in Kynren, a 90-minute live outdoor-theatre performance on a seven-and-a-half-acre outdoor stage.

With outdoor games, craft competitions, ice breaker activities and live music, the volunteers of all ages enjoyed a much-needed afternoon off before the live shows begin.

Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren, said: “We’re delighted to welcome so many of Kynren’s volunteers to this picnic, coinciding with the 40th annual Volunteers’ Week and The Big Lunch. Our production and ability to tell the tale of England’s history on such a large scale wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers devoting their time and passion to Kynren. We’re so grateful to them.”

Wendy Wilshere, head of volunteer casting and engagement at Kynren, believes the celebration of volunteers will also create the opportunity for a stronger cast and crew during the 2024 season.

Wendy said, “We call our volunteers Archers as a nod to the charity 11Arches which hosts Kynren, and the Archers picnic was a wonderful way to introduce teams of volunteers involved in Kynren that may not meet otherwise.

“The tech team involved in sound and lighting, the estate team who care for the stage and landscape, and the cast performing in front of audiences, amongst others, all came together and enjoyed lunch in a spectacular setting on the water’s edge.”

Volunteers’ Week is a UK wide celebration thanking volunteers for the contributions they make to communities and society. Starting each year on the first Monday in June the week-long event is also marked by The Big Lunch, a chance to enjoy a meal together and share their volunteering stories.

From Boudicca’s battles with the Romans to two world wars, via Vikings, Tudors, Stuarts, Queen Victoria and the Industrial Revolution, Kynren is a spellbinding, family-friendly experience delivering thrills, shocks, tears, laughs, goosebumps and gasps on a truly cinematic scale. The 8,000-seater tribune provides panoramic views across the giant seven-and-a-half-acre outdoor stage.

The 90-minute performances start at sunset and end in starlight and will be taking place every Saturday night from 27th July to 14th September.

Tickets cost from £26 for adults and from £16 for under 18s. Children aged 3 and under are free when sat on an adult’s knee.
