HaHaKeys uses jokes to teach typing

A new typing app is helping primary school children learn to type through jokes. Free to use and browser-based, it’s designed for quick, easy access at home or in the classroom.

HaHaKeys challenges players to type the setup line of a joke, rewarding them with the punchline once completed. Along the way, they can track their typing speed in characters and words per minute, monitor accuracy, and aim for a streak of 100% correct entries.

“Lots of typing tutors ask children to type random words and then show an unrelated animation,” says creator Sean McManus. “I wanted to make typing itself rewarding by using meaningful text. Each line typed builds anticipation for the punchline, making the experience both fun and engaging.”

The app currently features 170 family-friendly jokes, with more added regularly. Users can also submit their own jokes via an online form.

“Typing is such a fundamental skill,” Sean adds. “I hope young people enjoy using HaHaKeys as a fun way to practise and improve. I tested it with my coding club and the feedback was incredibly positive.”

HaHaKeys is available now at www.HaHaKeys.com and can be used in classrooms, Code Clubs or at home. It runs entirely in the browser, with no registration required.
