Message from Kernow Health

“As we head towards the summer term, the school age immunisation team are busy continuing to deliver the vaccination programme in secondary schools in Cornwall and Devon.

At this time of year, you may have children getting ready to move from primary to secondary school, or you may have older children already there. For secondary school age children, the vaccination programme offers routine vaccinations, one of these is for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). This vaccination is first offered to boys and girls aged 12 to 13, and we aim to make sure children are immunised before they leave school in year 11. Previously this was given in two doses, however, the latest evidence shows that one dose provides protection as effectively as two doses. This is excellent news for young people.

If your child has already received one dose of the vaccination, they will be considered fully immunised and will not need another dose.

The HPV vaccination programme is one of the most successful in the world and has dramatically lowered the rates of some cancers, such as cervical cancer in women and harmful infections in both women and men – preventing many serious illness and saving lives.

You will be told when your child is due their HPV vaccination, and for this, and all other vaccinations we offer, you will need to complete a consent form, details of which can be found in the letter you receive from us via your child’s school or Elective Home Education Teams. You can also find a list of FAQs on our website.

We are always happy to answer any questions you might have, and to complete a consent form with you over the phone if that is your preference. Please contact our team on: kernowhealthcic.schoolimmsdevon@nhs.net or call 01392 342678.”
