Discover the history of Gloucester, in Lego!

“Incredible” Lego models portraying Gloucester’s past are to be displayed at Museum of Gloucester as part of its celebration of the Gloucester History Festival this month. Between Fri 16 Sep and Sun 18 Sep, the museum displays three Lego recreations of parts of the historic city: The Roman Forum, Gloucester’s lost Medieval Bridge and Medieval Westgate Street. There are also fun Lego activities alongside these displays including a Lego minifig-a-gram competition where visitors hunt for hidden details in the models to win two pairs of tickets to the museum’s current Titantic exhibition.

This free competition takes place over 45 minute sessions on the hour every hour on Fri 16 Sep, 2-5pm, Sat 17 Sep, 10am-5pm, and Sat 17 Sep, 11am-4pm. Lego workshops led by BrickBox run on Sat 17 Sep with four hour long sessions starting at 10am, 11:30am, 13:30pm and 3pm respectively. The morning workshops focus on Lego boat building while the afternoon sessions focus on Roman mosaics. Each workshop ticket is £5 with a family ticket for £17.50 available as well.

Gloucestershire families can also see a rare Roman figurine of the goddess Venus at the museum until  Sun 18 Sep, for free, between 10 am and 5pm as part of the history festival. The figurine was discovered earlier this year during the King’s Walk Gloucester excavations run by Cotswold Archaeology. The ancient clay item is between 1800 and 1900 years old and depicts the Roman goddess Venus. The museum says the figurine’s completeness makes it a rarity, as, in Roman times, similar statuettes were destroyed ritualistically.
