Families, schools and charities across Gloucestershire are mourning the death of The Queen following the announcement of her passing yesterday afternoon at Balmoral in Scotland. Councils are opening books of condolence throughout the county with Cheltenham’s mayor Sandra Holliday among the first to announce how local people can pay their respects, including floral tributes.

Messages of condolence have been pouring in from schools, charities, and other organisations across Gloucestershire this morning. In a statement, Slimbridge Wetland Centre says, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Her Majesty the Queen, who we were privileged to have as our Patron for many decades.” Westonbirt Arboretum has announced it will remain open during the national mourning period so Gloucestershire residents can have a place to remember The Queen. “We are saddened, at Westonbirt Arboretum, by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our condolences are with The Royal Family,” it says. Other Gloucestershire organisations paying tribute include Moreton Show, Dean Close School, Gloucester Cathedral, Stonar School, Cotswold Farm Park, NHS Gloucestershire, Cheltenham Town Hall and even Gloucestershire’s famous clown, Tweedy, who posted a picture of The Queen shaking hands with Kermit the Frog.

Stroud Council has announced books of condolence have been opened at thre locations: Stroud District Council, Ebley Mill, Stroud; The Pulse, Castle Street, Dursley; and Wotton Civic Centre, Wotton-under-Edge.

The tributes take many shapes and sizes with some organisations releasing commemorative photographs and some changing the colour of their social media to black.
