Staffordshire Pupil makes U18 England Hockey Squad!
It is with great pleasure and pride that Abbotsholme school announces their most recent success story. Hugh Phillips-Bland, one of their Sixth Form pupils, has just received the exciting news that he has made it through the final stages of selection for the 2022 U18 England National Hockey Squad. Hugh is one of three goal keepers chosen for a place, making him one of the top three hockey goal keepers in England, which in itself is a marvellous achievement.
Hugh started to play hockey at the age of 12, for Leek Hockey Club. He then went on to play for Chesterfield Men’s 1st Team. In September 2021 and at the age of 17, Hugh was invited to train with the U18 England National Hockey Squad, which was a two day trial at Loughborough University following the success of winning the national tournament Futures Cup with Mercia Lynx, who were his regional squad.
During the six months’ selection process, Hugh has attended training camps at national sports centres such as Lilleshall, Bisham Abbey and Nottingham University, which saw the training squad reducing from 70 hopeful players to just 26.
In addition to all the coaching and support Hugh has been given at Abbotsholme School, particularly from Kevin Heath, Hockey Coach and Miss Harrison, Director of Sport at Abbotsholme – Hugh also remembers those individuals who have helped him along the way. Namely, Mrs Batigan from St. Edwards School, who first introduced Hugh to hockey and goal keeping, Bev Cartlidge from Leek Hockey Club, who coached him between the age of 13-15 and finally, John Marshall, hockey coach who has also supported him throughout the journey.
Now, Hugh is training hard to ensure his selection for matches in 2022 during February, Easter and July, competing against other European National U18 Teams.
