Subsidised breaks for Wiltshire’s SEND kids available now

The application deadline for the 2022-2023 Wiltshire Short Breaks Scheme is Sunday 6 March

Wiltshire families whose children have special educational needs or disabilities can now apply to Wiltshire Council for its 2022-2023 Short Breaks Scheme which provides leisure opportunities and breaks for SEND children and young people in the county.

Eligible families can choose from one of three options. First, they can opt to receive a lump sum allowing parents and carers to organise their own activities such as swimming, riding lessons, trips out or play equipment. Second, they can choose 84 hours of Barnardo’s Activity Clubs held at various venues with three or six hour sessions or day trips. The third option is a mixture of the two, with up to 42 hours of organised Barnardo’s activity clubs  and a smaller lump sum of self-organised activities. The scheme is open to children and young people aged 6 to 18 and Wiltshire council subsidises all options, with families paying some contribution.

Cllr Laura Mayes, cabinet member for Children’s Services says, “We know families appreciate the flexibility and independence this scheme provides. They know what works best for their child and this scheme means they can use the funding available to make it work for them.”
