Have your say on Amesbury's new cycle and walking scheme

Wiltshire Council has appealed for residents’ views on its proposed new cycling and walking scheme in Amesbury and beyond. Aiming to offer great days out for families, the proposal includes a new cycling and walking facility on Countess Road in the centre of the town, creating better links between Amesbury, Woodhenge, Larkhill, and Durrington.

The proposed walkways and cycle paths follow Countess Road from Amesbury town centre, cross the A303 Countess roundabout, and continue north to Fargo Road and Woodhenge where pedestrians and cyclists can take the Packway to Durrington and Larkhill. The scheme is to extend to Stonehenge, to encourage the prehistoric monument’s visitors to travel onwards to Amesbury and boost the town’s economy.

The scheme is part of Wiltshire’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP)which includes similar walking and cycling schemes across the county. Three of these are already completed in Chippenham, Devizes and Trowbridge while the other schemes are at Bradford on Avon, Calne, Corsham, Malmesbury, Marlborough, Melksham, Royal Wootton Bassett, Tidworth, Warminster, and Westbury.

Cllr Dr. Mark McClelland says, “Cycling and walking can improve people’s physical and mental health, reduce congestion, save money, improve air quality, and help to tackle climate change. The Wiltshire and Salisbury LCWIPs will set out the cycling and walking opportunities in our county over the short, medium and long-term, so it is important that people take this opportunity to share their views on the plans.”

Residents have until Friday 23 September to express their views in an online survey available here: https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/transport-town-cycle-networks
