Wiltshire walks, talks and takes tea for Pudsey
The Wiltshire Walkers, WALX Wessex (pictured) and residents of the Wingfield Care Home are just a few of Wiltshire people helping to raise money for the BBC’s Children in Need appeal taking place this evening. The care home is raising money by hosting a tea party and inviting local children, while the two walking groups have joined the ‘Walk and Talk for Children in Need’ initiative promoted by fitness guru Joe Wicks and carried out walks of their own, with WALX Wessex raising £300 at the time of writing. Last year the BBC raised over £39 million on the night of its Children in Need broadcast, eventually reaching £50,991,355 over the ensuing months. Organisers are hoping to exceed this target this year.
Many Wiltshire charities are supported by BBC Children in Need this year with one such organisation being Swindon-based Wiltshire Treehouse that supports children and young people across the county who are experiencing bereavement. The support from BBC Children in Need allows Wiltshire Treehouse to provide support groups that increase children’s ability to cope with loss, establish social support networks, and give anyone suffering bereavement the ability to communicate their feelings in a safe and supportive space.
Swindon’s Prime Theatre has partnered with BBC Children in Need to support disabled children and young people in education by raising aspirations, increasing confidence, and decreasing emotional distress through youth theatre sessions.
Community First is another charity supported by BBC Children in Need this year. The Devizes-based charity supports children and young people across Wiltshire who are young carers and aims to enable them to feel safer as carers, increase their self-esteem and reduce their isolation. With the support of BBC Children in Need, the organisation delivers advocacy and advice support sessions for young carers.
